Tamami Shima (1937-99).

There is surprisingly little known about this extraordinary artist.
She appears to have been most active between 1959 and 62.
Her work was published considered of such exceptional quality to be one of just ten artists to be selected to feature in James A. Michener’s iconic book (and accompanying folio of prints) ‘Modern Japanese Prints’ in 1962.

Tamami Shima moved to America at some time in the early 60’s to marry an, as yet, unidentified artist.
She appears to have left her woodblocks to artist Shiro Takagi, who printed from them, signing with his own name. Whether he had Tamami Shima’s blessing to do this is unclear.

There then appears to be little or no output after her move to the States.

This is a delightful composition which I think is titled ‘Blue Jar’.
It is signed (both on the print and below), dated 1961 and titled in Japanese script.

The frame size is approximately 51cm x 38cm.
It’s in generally good condition with some yellowing. The frame has marks but I think is original, so I’ll keep it unless someone wants it changed.

A special and fairly rare print.
Her work is held in many, many international museums including the British Museum and MoMA in New York.
