Reika Iwami (1927-2020)
Wonderful original Japanese woodblock print, with embossed area, gold leaf and mica. 1978.
Iwami was the first modern femaleJapanese printmaker to be given the same worldwide recognition as her male couterparts, both by the art world and by her peers.
Her work is held by many prestigious museums, including MOMA, The Art Institute of Chicago and the British Museum.
This is a lovely clean print, with just some yellowing of the paper to the margins.
The original frame (Tokyo framers label to the rear) has lost some of its gilding and is a little scuffed, but I think it suits the print well, and I’m not inclined to change it.
The frame measures approximately 663cm x 49cm.
Signed, numbered (27 of just 50 prints) and probably titled and dated ‘78.
