McAslan was a founding member of the Glasgow Group which included James Spence, Alasdair Gray, James Morrison and the great Alan Fletcher, who sadly died before their first major exhibition together at the McLellan Galleries in Glasgow. The Glasgow Group was founded as a snub to the perceived establishment of the time, namely the RSA in Edinburgh and the RGI in Glasgow. Maybe more a lack of acceptance than a snub. They would go on to have many successful exhibitions together, both in Scotland and London.McAslan moved to Canada in the 1960s and would spend almost 30 years there before returning to Scotland and settling in Pittenweem in the East Neuk of Fife.
After McAslan’s death in 2008, his friends Alasdair Gray, James Spence and others from the original Glasgow Group helped organise an exhibition of his work at the Hidden Lane Gallery in Glasgow. This painting may be from that exhibition.
The painting is in good condition, and it is large, approximately 129cm x 68cm including the frame. The frame has marks, but nothing too bad. It is almost certainly the original frame, so I won’t change it unless someone asks me to.
